Congratulations to our adult Student of the Month: Sean Lee!

Hi Sean, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am Sean Lee and I grew up in Los Angeles, California. I have 1 sister. I am currently living in Alhambra, California. My other hobby besides Muay Thai Kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu are radio-controlled planes. I am a toy designer for Walt Disney.

What classes do you take and what got you interested?

Currently, I am taking both Muay Thai Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I like that they are both great for health and confidence.

How long have you been training and what is your current belt rank?

I have been training for 9 months and am currently a White Belt.

What is your favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class?

My favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class is about strategy.

Student of the Month Sean Lee in the middle under the logo on the right in group picture of the Wednesday night BJJ Fundamentals

Do you have a favorite Jiu-Jitsu technique?

My favorite Jiu-Jitsu technique is the arm lock.

What current and future goals do you have?

My main goal is to stay active.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us?

My nickname is Dolomite. It has been awarded to me by coach Chris.

Sean’s main goal is to stay active.

Staying active contributes to staying healthy in particular growing older according to the CDC. Unfortunately, more than 80% of adults do not meet the guidelines for physical activity which is examined by U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing will help you meet those guidelines so you can lead a happy and healthy life.
Congratulations to our Kids BJJ 2 student: Charles!

Hi Charles, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am 10 years old, and my name is Charles. I have 5 family members, my mom, dad, Alex my brother, and my pet dog, Max. One of my favorite hobbies is grilling, and playing with circuits.

Why did you start training Jiu-Jitsu?

The reason why I started Jiu-Jitsu is that before we used to do swimming lessons, so we quit, but we had to find something else to do. So we picked Silanoe Martial Arts because it was the closest dojo we could find around our house.

When did you start training Jiu-Jitsu and how often do you come to class?

We started in August 2018. I come to Silanoe Martial arts every Saturday.

What is your favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class?

My favorite part of Jiu-Jitsu is the end of the class when there is sparring.

Charles and his big brother Alex resting after a hard Saturday Kids BJJ 2 class

What do you like most about Professor Gino’s teachings?

I like how he shows the move he’s teaching at every angle, and how he explains the move.

Questions for Charles’ dad Tony

What improvements have you noticed in Charles since he’s been doing Jiu-Jitsu?

Charles is more self-confident and more social.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

I believe joining the Silanoe family has been a great experience for us.

A group picture with both Saturday Kids 1 & 2 classes together and Charles right in the middle behind Prof. Gino.

Martial Arts has shown to help kids to become more self-confident.

We believe that kids become more confident because of the challenges they face starting out in Jiu-Jitsu. They grow more confident because they are able to overcome challenges because of the skills they develop along the way. Jiu-Jitsu is a direct way of learning. There are a lot of trials and errors and more importantly, when a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner makes a mistake they will immediately see the unfortunate result of that. This enables them to acknowledge realize that and learn from the mistake, adapt and eventually overcome. If you would like your kids to try out Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu request a Free Week Trial here.
I, Caleb live(s) in Alhambra and I grew up there. I am currently a Senior at Alhambra High School. I am passionate about learning human psychology and everything about countries around the world. I live with my mom, dad, twin brother, and pet dog.

What classes do you take and what got you interested?

I trained for a year in Muay Thai Kickboxing and currently, I am taking Jiu-Jitsu. I am a white belt in BJJ.

What is your favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu & Muay Thai class?

My favorite part of these classes is being able to practice and spar with the other students.

Do you have a favorite Jiu-Jitsu or Muay Thai technique?

My favorite Muay Thai technique is definitely the Head Kick. The Jiu-Jitsu technique I favor the most is the Rear Naked Choke.

Caleb getting the armbar submission in the Jiu-Jitsu sparring at the Fundamentals class

What current and future goals do you have?

I plan on training until I am a proficient beginner in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us?

I also want to say that knowing both Muay-Thai and Jiu-Jitsu gives a strong foundation for the potential for me as a person.

Caleb has been training both Muay Thai Kickboxing and BJJ and he sees it as a strong foundation.

Caleb values the potential Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu have for personal growth. His favorite part is the sparring because it gives him the opportunity to learn together with teammates and apply all the knowledge in live training. If you would like to discover how Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai can benefit your personal growth request a free week of training. We have added classes to our schedule making it easier to fit anyone’s schedule so don’t forget to check it out.

Congratulations to our Student of the Month: Ally!

Hi Ally, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am 13 years old and my hobbies include skateboarding, Jiu-Jitsu, and color-guard. I am the youngest of four siblings.

What is the reason you started training Jiu-Jitsu?

I started training Jiu-Jitsu because my dad was already in Jiu-Jitsu and one day I decided to try it myself because I thought it looked like lots of fun.

When did you start training Jiu-Jitsu and how often do you come to class?

I started training Jiu-Jitsu last May, and now I come 2 to 3 days a week.

What is your favorite thing about Jiu-Jitsu class?

My favorite thing about Jiu-Jitsu is learning new moves like how to do different submissions and takedowns, and I like learning about the history of Jiu-Jitsu.

What do you like most about Professor Gino’s teachings?

What I like most about Professor Gino’s teaching is how he shows us the thought process between the moves and what we are learning.

Questions for Ally’s dad Monty:

What improvements have you noticed in Ally since she’s been practicing Jiu-Jitsu?

I have noticed an all-around improvement in the way Ally behaves. Both at home and in public. She has much more confidence and resilience.

You, Ally & her cousins do Jiu-Jitsu together, how has that been going and do you practice together at home?

It’s great to have all of the kids involved because we get to do this together. It’s a family sport now and it’s quality time spending together. We do little drills and practice some light techniques in our living room sometimes.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

I would say that Jiu-Jitsu is an activity that will show you that you can overcome things you never thought you could have or even imagined at one time, and all it takes is for you to keep showing up and stepping on the mat. I also would like to say congratulations to Ally! I am really proud of you!

Ally’s Dad Monty is proud of his daughter.

Monty, Ally and her two cousins share Jiu-Jitsu as a family activity and it is considered quality time for them. Monty finds that Jiu-Jitsu shows them overcome obstacles that they never have even imagined before.
Challenge yourself by trying Jiu-Jitsu and be surprised by how it will benefit you.
Hi Alex, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

I like to ride my bike, do Jiu-Jitsu, swim, play video games, and take hikes. My favorite things about these are that it is relaxing and keeps me occupied when I have nothing to do on weekends.

Why did you start training Jiu-Jitsu?

I started doing Jiu-Jitsu because I needed to exercise after swimming.

When did you start training Jiu-Jitsu and how often do you come to
class?

At the end of Aug 2018, I started training. I only come once a week on Saturdays.

Alex K. in the middle in front of the wall mats

What is your favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class?

My favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class is the sparring. I love this because I can learn my partner moves and learn from my mistakes.

What do you like most about Professor Gino’s teachings?

I like Professor Gino because he explains the moves in a way that I can understand him if I have trouble he comes and helps me.

Questions for Tony Alex’s dad

What improvements have you noticed in Alex since he’s practicing Jiu-Jitsu?

Alex’s self-confidence has greatly improved.

You, your wife & both sons do Jiu-Jitsu together, how has that been going and do you practice together at home?

We love doing Jiu-Jitsu as a family. Unfortunately, we don’t practice at home due to our busy schedules, so we look forward to our Saturday mornings together. Once the boys get older, it would be great to share some mat time together.

As a family, we have all benefited from Jiu-Jitsu in different ways.

Saturday morning is a family activity time for Alex and his family.

Alex his mom Phuong, dad Tony and younger brother Charles are all training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. If you are looking for a family activity you should consider Jiu-Jitsu.
Hi Robert, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Robert Terriquez and I currently live in the City of San Gabriel with my beautiful wife and 16-year-old daughter. I grew up in the city of Rosemead the eldest of 6 siblings 3 brothers and three sisters. I attended San Gabriel High school where I found an interest in computers and technology. I attended DeVry University and graduated with an AA degree in Electronics and Computer Science. I currently work for East West Bank as the head of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Information Technology Risk. This just means that I help position the Bank to run in any type of disruption or crisis by helping to prepare both the technical and business unit side. I enjoy mountain bike riding with my brother-in-law Tony. We mountain bike every Saturday morning at the crack of dawn to make sure we are back in time for Jiu-Jitsu. I have been mountain bike riding for approximately 15 years and I enjoy it because it gives me the opportunity to exercise while surrounded by nature which is very peaceful. I feel that climbing mountains on a bike parallels life as when you start at the bottom of the mountain you do not think it is possible to make to the top but once I get started it amazes me what you can really do if you do not stop. Its always a good feeling coming down the mountain after you have made it to the top!

What classes do you take and what got you interested?

I currently attend the Saturday 11 AM Jiu-Jitsu class. Originally was looking for some type of Martial Arts that would be good for my daughter Jena and then Silanoe Jiu-Jitsu opened in my neighborhood. I decided to join together with my daughter and after one year my daughter was not able to attend because of school activities but I could not stop because I enjoy it so much!

How long have you been training and what is your current belt rank?

I have now been training for 1 year and 4 months with a white belt double stripe ranking.

Robert in a group picture with daughter Jena on the far left and sister in law Phuong Kwan on her right. Brother-in-law Tony is on Robert’s right

What is your favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class?

My favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class is trying to apply what I have learned during the grappling and sparring at the end of the class. It’s the hardest part but I notice that it gives me the most opportunity as every person is a different challenge.

Do you have a favorite Jiu-Jitsu technique?

I do not have a favorite technique as of yet. Every time I learn something new it becomes my favorite technique. My first year I learned that I really enjoyed Jiu-Jitsu this 2nd year I hope to learn my favorite technique that I can apply as a second nature type move.

What current and future goals do you have?

I want to continue to learn as much as I can by attending additional classes during the weekdays. My short term goal is to train hard, learn, build good endurance. My long term goal is sometime this year would like to compete and challenge myself to move to the next level.

<img decoding="async" width="686" height="515" src="https://www.silanoemartialarts.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Robert-Terriquez-passing-the-BJJ-SLX-guard.jpg" alt="Student of the Month Robert Terriquez(white gi) is training with teammate Tomas Morales(blue gi).
Is there anything else that you would like to share with us?

Jiu-Jitsu is so much fun and its now a part of my life that I can not do without. I really look forward to my Saturday class because I get to see my Jiu-Jitsu family who helps me challenge myself while at the same time giving me the opportunity to learn from them. I respect the knowledge and instruction from Professor Gino and I appreciate the friendships and collective learning from the extended Jiu-Jitsu family. Thank you for everything!

Robert wanted his daughter to learn martial arts and ended up joining Silanoe Martial Arts as well.

Robert first rides his mountain bike Saturday early morning with his brother-in-law Tony. After the session they both head over and train at Silanoe Martial Arts. Robert enjoys a challenge and his goal is to compete later this year.
Hi Nicholas, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m 9 years old. I like to draw and I also like family time. My favorite character of all time is Sonic the Hedgehog.

Why did you start training Jiu-Jitsu?

I was interested because I wanted to learn how to defend myself and make new friends.

When did you start training Jiu-Jitsu and how often do you come to class?

About 5 months ago I started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I go twice a week.

<img decoding="async" width="605" height="454" src="https://www.silanoemartialarts.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Nicholas-attacking-from-the-closed-guard-at-the-Silanoe-kids-self-defense-program.jpg" alt="Kyle in blue and Nicholas in black training together in the Jiu-Jitsu kids 2 program at Silanoe Martial Arts San Gabriel Alhambra adjacent.
What is your favorite part about Jiu-Jitsu class?

The sparring is my favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class.

What do you like most about Professor Gino’s teachings?

I like how he shows us the moves, how to do them properly and he’s always helpful.

Questions for Nicholas’ mom Eunice:

What improvements have you noticed in Nicholas since he’s been practicing Jiu-Jitsu?

Nicholas has more confidence in himself and believes he can defend himself. He is also learning to get out of his comfort zone and is more self-conscious of himself and his actions.

Nicholas initiating a Torreando guard pass on Kyle earning the 3 guard passing points.

Nicholas has become more confident and can defend himself.

Martial Arts will help anyone gain confidence and they will learn how to defend themselves. It also helped Nicholas to get out of his comfort zone and made him grow. Currently, I am working in the online media community where I can pursue my passion for shooting and directing photo and video content. When I’m not working, exploring local restaurants or are out with my dogs I spend my time at Silanoe Martial Arts.

Hi Kenny, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Kenny Wu and I currently live in San Gabriel. I was born in Hong Kong but grew up in the San Gabriel/San Marino area. I went to school at UC Berkeley and the University of Illinois but eventually worked my way back to Southern California. I work as an ER physician. In my free time, I like watching basketball, especially the Lakers. I am a huge car enthusiast and enjoy restoring old cars. I am mostly into vintage/classic cars from Japan and Europe. My pride and joy are my 1971 BMW 2002 and a 1994 Mazda RX7.

What classes do you take and what got you interested?

I try to go to all the BJJ classes I can. I also take Muay Thai classes. I got interested because I have been practicing and competing in Taekwondo and Muay Thai for many years, and I wanted to be a more complete fighter so I decided to start BJJ.

A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt should be anyone’s goal starting Jiu-Jitsu. It is a journey of years. It requires true dedication to the art. If you would like to take on such a challenge come join our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy located in San Gabriel/Alhambra adjacent. I cook a lot of pasta and Asian foods because I’m very Asian. Everything besides this I am a very lazy person at home, I just sit on the couch and watch YouTube.

Why did you start training Jiu-Jitsu?

I started Jiu-Jitsu because I am a very lazy person at home and I decided to get more exercise and be healthy for once. I also wanted to start this because I wanted to learn how to defend myself against other people, like my dad. Now since I do Jiu-Jitsu my dad doesn’t mess with me anymore.

When did you start training Jiu-Jitsu and how often do you come to class?

I’ve been going to class 3 times a week since April, which is about 7 months ago if my math is correct. If it isn’t then I have a D in math, but if it is I have an A++.

What is your favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class?

My favorite part of Jiu-Jitsu is learning interesting and helpful techniques. I also like it that I’m getting exercise because I am lazy.

What do you like most about Professor Gino’s teachings?

I like it that Professor Gino is very calm and shows the techniques step by step. I also like that Professor Gino makes sound effects whenever he demonstrates things.

Avery collecting a total of 5 points first by sweeping and then by passing the guard

Questions for Avery’s dad Levy:

What improvements have you noticed in Avery since he started practicing Jiu-Jitsu?

Since Avery started jiu-jitsu, he has improved his nutrition and overall health. He has also improved his focus on completing his tasks including school work.
