Student of the Month: Ken Leung(Muay Thai & Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Adults)

Congratulations to our Student of the Month: Ken!

Ken training Jiu-Jitsu at Silanoe San Gabriel Alhambra

Hi Ken, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I grew up in Monterey Park and I still live in the San Gabriel Valley area. I currently work in digital advertising out in West LA and I’ve been in this industry for the last 5-6 years. Honestly, I love physical activities and playing all kinds of sports- basketball, volleyball, tennis, you name it, but I have a particular interest in combat sports. And what I mean by that is, this is an area that I want to actively get good at. Also, I love animals and dogs are my favorite.

What classes do you take and what got you interested?

I take both Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai classes. I’ve been interested in Muay Thai for many years because I always saw it as having very practical applications and it just seemed really appealing to me. I got into Jiu-Jitsu just watching people roll around after Muay Thai class and I thought I’d try it out.

How long have you been training and what is your current belt rank?

I’ve been doing Muay Thai since October 2017 and Jiu-Jitsu since the beginning of this year. I’m currently a white belt with one stripe in BJJ.

What is your favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class?

My favorite part of the class is more of a feeling. It’s when things that used to look confusing start to make sense…when you learn a move in a prior class, forget how to do it, and then you’re learning it again…and things start to ‘click’ a little bit. This is actually the reason I like the BJJ Fundamentals classes.

Do you have a favorite Jiu-Jitsu technique?

I always go for getting into closed guard and attempting to pull an armbar. Now my secret is out…

You occasionally train Muay Thai Kickboxing as well. What aspects do you like about it?

Everything, honestly. It’s a great workout, it’s insanely fun and I love that we spar with our training partners at the end of class.

What current and future goals do you have?

If I can see myself improving little by little, that would make me happy. I’d also like to compete in a Jiu-Jitsu tournament at least once.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us?

I’m just glad I decided to start. Whether it was Muay Thai or Jiu-Jitsu; Professor Gino, Coach Gabriel, Coach Luis, Coach David are all good mentors. I’m proud to be a part of Silanoe Martial Arts, I just wished I had started earlier;)
