5 Reasons why Jiu-Jitsu is great for Self-Defense.

Martial Arts practitioners like myself will always wonder how effective their art will be when they need it. I have always certainly always wondered it, and thankfully haven’t had to use it in real life for a while now. One of the main reasons students end up joining our academy is because they want to be able to defend themselves. Here are 5 main reasons why Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that is well-suited for self-defense.

  1. Jiu-Jitsu focuses on grappling. Jiu-Jitsu techniques enables you to control an opponent with the use of holds, throws, and joint locks. This is very useful for self-defense, because it allows a smaller, physically weaker person to defend themselves against a larger, stronger attacker without having to rely on striking.
  2. Jiu-Jitsu is centered around the notion of leverage and technique. Jiu-Jitsu techniques rely on leverage and technique rather than brute strength. It’s common to see techniques that allow anyone, regardless of size or strength, to be able defend themselves effectively. Lighter practitioners can spar and do very well against physically more imposing individuals.
  3. Applicability to different real-life situations. Jiu-Jitsu techniques can be applied to a variety of different situations, from standing to the ground. This makes it a very useful martial art for real-world self-defense scenarios where an attacker may try to take you down. Studies have been shown that it is high likely that you will end up on the ground with any physical altercation.
  4. Jiu-Jitsu encompasses practical training methods. Jiu-Jitsu training involves a tremendous amount of live sparring. This enables Jiu-Jitsu practitioners to test their techniques in realistic situations. Self-defense scenarios require quick thinking and prompt reaction  under extreme pressure. Live training will prepare Jiu-Jitsu practitioners to get and stay ready.
  5. Jiu-Jitsu not only sharpens the mind, it also sharpens the body. Practitioners will increase their overall fitness, improve their balance, coordination, and flexibility. It has a positive effect on one’s confidence and will improve their self-discipline.

In conclusion, Jiu-Jitsu is a particularly well-rounded martial art which encompasses practical self-defense skills, physical and mental benefits, and it provides a fun and challenging, but safe training environment.
