Last month, we hosted 3 days of special classes for our Kids 1 Jiu-Jitsu program. Our Jiu-Jitsu Parent & Kid classes brought together families for a day filled with fun, learning and connection. It was a fantastic opportunity for parents and kids to bond over shared experiences on the mats. Here’s a recap of the days highlights!

Warm-Up and Team Building

Each day kicked off with an energetic warm-up led by our skilled instructors. Parents and kids participated together doing running exercises and animal drills, as well as perfecting invisible chairs. The laughter and excitement were palpable, making it clear that each day was about more than just martial arts; it was about creating lasting memories.

Technique Workshops

After the warm-ups, we dove into technique workshops tailored for all skill levels. Our instructors demonstrated fundamental moves, emphasizing safety and proper form. Parents learned alongside their children, fostering an environment of encouragement and support. The shared goal of mastering techniques led to many fun moments and a few friendly competitions!

Sparring and Play

Next, we organized sparring sessions where kids and parents could test their skills in a controlled environment. This activity not only reinforced the techniques learned, but also emphasized the importance of communication and trust between parents and kids. This last challenge was met with enthusiasm, showcasing the bond that Jiu-Jitsu cultivates.

Closing Reflections

As the day came to a close, families gathered to share their experiences. Parents expressed their pride in their children’s growth, both on and off the mats. The smiles and stories shared highlighted the community spirit that Jiu-Jitsu fosters.

We’re excited to continue this journey together, with more events planned in the future. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or just starting, there’s always a place for you in our community. Thank you to everyone who participated and made this event unforgettable! Now, if you have missed our first parent and child class and you like to be there for the next, please contact us. Or take a look at our current schedule and feel free to drop by. Hope to see you soon!

1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself, such as your name, age, where you reside, and how long you’ve been practicing martial arts?

My name is Brian Tanner Woo, my age is 28, currently residing in Monterey Park, CA. I have been practicing martial arts since 2018!

2. What inspired you to start practicing martial arts?

I have always had an interest in biomechanics and limits of the human body. It wasn’t until my friend introduced me to a trial week at Silanoe Martial Arts on what I now know is called Jiu Jitsu. It has opened my eyes and became one of my favorite hobbies ever since!

3. What motivated you to join Silanoe Martial Arts?

I came to Silanoe for my friend, but stayed because of the right combination of a playful and competitive environment that Silanoe has to offer.

4. Can you share some memorable experiences or milestones you’ve achieved during your time at the academy?

I would say getting a belt promotion is a pretty big milestone, because it means you’re progressing but other than that, I would say it’s two things: the moment where everything you learn clicks and it becomes muscle memory and the memories you make along the way with friends on and off the mat. As corny and cliche as it is, it is truly about the journey and not the destination.

5. What aspects of Jiu-Jitsu or Muay Thai do you find most challenging, and how do you overcome them?

The most challenging thing I think is about jiu jitsu is learning a new move or new playstyle and applying it to your game. But also, that’s the best part about jiu jitsu as well because there will always be something to challenge yourself with.

6. In what ways have you seen yourself grow, both physically and mentally, through practicing martial arts?

An aspect I have seen myself improve on is self discipline and just honestly being a part of something that’s bigger than yourself while still having room for individuality. I’ve made many friends and memories along the way and I’ve learned irreplaceable knowledge that can be applied to daily life. My cardio still sucks though but that one is on me.

7. What advice would you give to someone considering starting martial arts?

My advice for people starting is honestly just keep going. I know people say that a lot but that’s usually because there is some truth to it. It may be daunting or discouraging to start because you’ll be the nail for good while, but one day you’ll start being the hammer and you’ll see that all those hours you sacrificed paid off.

8. Where do you envision your martial arts journey taking you in the future?

I hope to one day reach black belt before my age catches up to me and hopefully enlighten others on how to learn from the mistakes I’ve made along my journey.

9. Is there anything else you’d like to add or share with our readers?

Thank you for listening to me speak and more importantly, thank you to Gino for being the coach that he is. If he didn’t make a great environment to practice jiu jitsu in, I wouldn’t have stayed for so long. I would also like to thank everyone else that has helped me become a better student and competitor.

Brian Tanner has seen improvement on his self discipline and enjoys being a part of something that’s bigger than himself. Jiu-Jitsu allows to have that while allowing room for individuality. If you would to experience Jiu-Jitsu please reach out to us or request a Free Trial.

1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself, such as your name, age, where you reside, and how long you’ve been practicing martial arts?

-My name is Angela, I’m 29 years old, and I live in Pasadena, CA. I attended my first BJJ class back in 2017, but I didn’t start practicing consistently until I joined Silanoe Martial Arts in 2021. This month actually marks my 3 year anniversary at this academy!

2. What inspired you to start practicing martial arts?

-I’ve always been interested in practicing martial arts, but, aside from a Kickboxing class here or there during college, never had the chance to when I was younger. When I became an adult, with adult money and my own car, I signed myself up! Additionally, with the rise of asian hate during the pandemic, I was tired of feeling helpless and figured it’d be a good opportunity for me to learn how to defend myself and those around me.

3. What motivated you to join Silanoe Martial Arts?

-I moved to the area during the pandemic and, coming out of quarantine, I was looking for a place where I would feel safe practicing BJJ (both mentally and physically) and begin re-building my community. Silanoe Martial Arts was clean, covid-conscious, locally owned and operated, and had a growing and thriving women’s community. Bonus points that it was 5 minutes away from where I was living at the time.

4. Can you share some memorable experiences or milestones you’ve achieved during your time at the academy?

-The most memorable experience/milestone for me was probably competing in my first Jiu Jitsu competition as a white belt! I never pictured myself competing in a fight sport before, so I feel a lot of pride and accomplishment in forcing myself outside of my comfort zone and doing something that’s really scary, and surviving.

5. What aspects of Jiu-Jitsu or Muay Thai do you find most challenging, and how do you overcome them?

-One of the biggest challenges for me has been learning to be more assertive in my matches. By nature, I’m not super aggressive, and it can be tough to find that balance between being controlled and technical while also initiating attacks and capitalizing on opportunities. I’ve been working to overcome this by coming in with a specific goal I want to get to in each roll (e.g. hit a triangle from this position) and trying to reframe my mindset around “aggression”. I tell myself I owe it to my teammates (and myself) to give them challenging rolls as that’s the only way for both of us to improve.

6. In what ways have you seen yourself grow, both physically and mentally, through practicing martial arts?

-Physically, jiu jitsu has greatly improved my conditioning and body awareness. Mentally, it’s greatly improved my confidence and mental well-being. It’s helped me re-shape my view of my body from what it looks like to what it can do, as well as provided a strong sense of community and a great outlet for stress.

7. What advice would you give to someone considering starting martial arts?

-Just do it! The martial arts community is so supportive and it’s really not as scary as you think it is. It might suck at first but a year from now you’ll look back and see how much progress you’ve made. Everyone always says the only regret they have is not starting sooner.

8. Where do you envision your martial arts journey taking you in the future?

-My main goal is to still be practicing in some capacity decades from now, well into old age. Of course, the biggest tangible goal is black belt, but for now I’m enjoying the journey and just trying to learn everything I can about Jiu Jitsu.

9. Is there anything else you’d like to add or share with our readers?

-Martial arts has been such a positive influence in my life. I’ve been able to meet such amazing people through jiu jitsu from all walks of life and there’s an immediate bond whenever you meet someone else who practices. It’s been such an honor to share the mats with both my teammates and amazing martial artists at gyms around the world.

Martial Arts has been an asset to Angela in many different ways.
Earning your Jiu-Jitsu Blue Belt

In our martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), a blue belt is the first color adult belt rank and it comes right after the white belt. It is seen as an achievement and a significant milestone in any Jiu-Jitsu practitioner’s journey. The criteria for earning a blue belt varies per school, instructor, and it mainly depends on the student’s own progress.
Jiu-Jitsu is a modern martial art and is continuously evolving. In many ways, it is not as rigid as other martial arts, and this is true for its belt requirements as well.

Since you have been working hard towards achieving that blue belt it is a good time for me to share what I look for when awarding a blue belt in BJJ, namely:

Technical knowledge and skill: A blue belt should have a decent understanding of fundamental BJJ techniques and be able to execute them with reasonable proficiency.

Consistency and mat time: A blue belt should have trained consistently and spent a certain amount of time on the mat. The exact amount of time can vary, but it typically ranges from one to three years.

Competition experience: Many BJJ schools require their students to compete in tournaments as part of their promotion criteria. Placing in tournaments or consistently performing well can demonstrate a student’s technical proficiency and mental toughness. Although competing is helpful to increase your skill level and overall knowledge and is encouraged, it is not a hard requirement to attain a blue belt at our academy.

Attitude and character: A blue belt should demonstrate good sportsmanship, respect for their training partners and instructors, and a willingness to keep learning and improve.

Physical fitness and conditioning: A blue belt should possess a reasonable level of physical fitness and conditioning, which is essential for executing techniques and avoiding injuries.

One clear indication you meet the skill level of a blue belt is that you have a good understanding of the progression of a Jiu-Jitsu match, as in the options you have to control the situation from a standing and a bottom position. A blue belt in Jiu-Jitsu for instance knows techniques needed in the beginning of a match such as a take down/guard pull and can then follow these up with techniques that lead in to positional control and ultimately result into a submission hold.
Achieving a blue belt is a significant accomplishment that requires a combination of technical skill, consistent training, and a positive attitude.

Keeping working hard, and no doubt you will earn it!

5 Reasons why Jiu-Jitsu is great for Self-Defense.

Martial Arts practitioners like myself will always wonder how effective their art will be when they need it. I have always certainly always wondered it, and thankfully haven’t had to use it in real life for a while now. One of the main reasons students end up joining our academy is because they want to be able to defend themselves. Here are 5 main reasons why Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that is well-suited for self-defense.

Jiu-Jitsu focuses on grappling. Jiu-Jitsu techniques enables you to control an opponent with the use of holds, throws, and joint locks. This is very useful for self-defense, because it allows a smaller, physically weaker person to defend themselves against a larger, stronger attacker without having to rely on striking.

Jiu-Jitsu is centered around the notion of leverage and technique. Jiu-Jitsu techniques rely on leverage and technique rather than brute strength. It’s common to see techniques that allow anyone, regardless of size or strength, to be able defend themselves effectively. Lighter practitioners can spar and do very well against physically more imposing individuals.

Applicability to different real-life situations. Jiu-Jitsu techniques can be applied to a variety of different situations, from standing to the ground. This makes it a very useful martial art for real-world self-defense scenarios where an attacker may try to take you down. Studies have been shown that it is high likely that you will end up on the ground with any physical altercation.

Jiu-Jitsu encompasses practical training methods. Jiu-Jitsu training involves a tremendous amount of live sparring. This enables Jiu-Jitsu practitioners to test their techniques in realistic situations. Self-defense scenarios require quick thinking and prompt reaction under extreme pressure. Live training will prepare Jiu-Jitsu practitioners to get and stay ready.

Jiu-Jitsu not only sharpens the mind, it also sharpens the body. Practitioners will increase their overall fitness, improve their balance, coordination, and flexibility. It has a positive effect on one’s confidence and will improve their self-discipline.

In conclusion, Jiu-Jitsu is a particularly well-rounded martial art which encompasses practical self-defense skills, physical and mental benefits, and it provides a fun and challenging, but safe training environment.

Ready to give it a try?
Congratulations to our adult Student of the Month: Sean Lee!

Hi Sean, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am Sean Lee and I grew up in Los Angeles, California. I have 1 sister. I am currently living in Alhambra, California. My other hobby besides Muay Thai Kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu are radio-controlled planes. I am a toy designer for Walt Disney.

What classes do you take and what got you interested?

Currently, I am taking both Muay Thai Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I like that they are both great for health and confidence.

How long have you been training and what is your current belt rank?

I have been training for 9 months and am currently a White Belt.

What is your favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class?

My favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu class is about strategy.

My main goal is to stay active.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us?

My nickname is Dolomite. It has been awarded to me by coach Chris.

Sean’s main goal is to stay active.

Staying active contributes to staying healthy in particular growing older according to the CDC. Unfortunately, more than 80% of adults do not meet the guidelines for physical activity which is examined by U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing will help you meet those guidelines so you can lead a happy and healthy life.
Congratulations to our Kids BJJ 2 student: Charles!

Hi Charles, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am 10 years old, and my name is Charles. I have 5 family members, my mom, dad, Alex my brother, and my pet dog, Max. One of my favorite hobbies is grilling, and playing with circuits.

Why did you start training Jiu-Jitsu?

The reason why I started Jiu-Jitsu is that before we used to do swimming lessons, so we quit, but we had to find something else to do. So we picked Silanoe Martial Arts because it was the closest dojo we could find around our house.

When did you start training Jiu-Jitsu and how often do you come to class?

We started in August 2018. I come to Silanoe Martial arts every Saturday.

Martial Arts has shown to help kids to become more self-confident.

We believe that kids become more confident because of the challenges they face starting out in Jiu-Jitsu. They grow more confident because they are able to overcome challenges because of the skills they develop along the way. Jiu-Jitsu is a direct way of learning. There are a lot of trials and errors and more importantly, when a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner makes a mistake they will immediately see the unfortunate result of that. This enables them to acknowledge realize that and learn from the mistake, adapt and eventually overcome.
Congratulations to our adult Student of the Month Caleb Luong!

Hi Caleb, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I, Caleb live(s) in Alhambra and I grew up there. I am currently a Senior at Alhambra High School. I am passionate about learning human psychology and everything about countries around the world. I live with my mom, dad, twin brother, and pet dog.

What classes do you take and what got you interested?

I trained for a year in Muay Thai Kickboxing and currently, I am taking Jiu-Jitsu. I am a white belt in BJJ.

What is your favorite part of the Jiu-Jitsu & Muay Thai class?

My favorite part of these classes is being able to practice and spar with the other students.

Do you have a favorite Jiu-Jitsu or Muay Thai technique?

My favorite Muay Thai technique is definitely the Head Kick. The Jiu-Jitsu technique I favor the most is the Rear Naked Choke.

Caleb getting the armbar submission in the Jiu-Jitsu sparring at the Fundamentals class

What current and future goals do you have?

I plan on training until I am a proficient beginner in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us?

I also want to say that knowing both Muay-Thai and Jiu-Jitsu gives a strong foundation for the potential for me as a person.

Caleb has been training both Muay Thai Kickboxing and BJJ and he sees it as a strong foundation.

Caleb values the potential Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu have for personal growth. His favorite part is the sparring because it gives him the opportunity to learn together with teammates and apply all the knowledge in live training.

Congratulations to our Student of the Month: Ally!

Hi Ally, can you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am 13 years old and my hobbies include skateboarding, Jiu-Jitsu, and color-guard. I am the youngest of four siblings.

What is the reason you started training Jiu-Jitsu?

I started training Jiu-Jitsu because my dad was already in Jiu-Jitsu and one day I decided to try it myself because I thought it looked like lots of fun.

When did you start training Jiu-Jitsu and how often do you come to class?

I started training Jiu-Jitsu last May, and now I come 2 to 3 days a week.

What is your favorite thing about Jiu-Jitsu class?

My favorite thing about Jiu-Jitsu is learning new moves like how to do different submissions and takedowns, and I like learning about the history of Jiu-Jitsu.

What do you like most about Professor Gino’s teachings?

What I like most about Professor Gino’s teaching is how he shows us the thought process between the moves and what we are learning.

Questions for Ally’s dad Monty:

What improvements have you noticed in Ally since she’s been practicing Jiu-Jitsu?

I have noticed an all-around improvement in the way Ally behaves. Both at home and in public. She has much more confidence and resilience.

You, Ally & her cousins do Jiu-Jitsu together, how has that been going and do you practice together at home?

It’s great to have all of the kids involved because we get to do this together. It’s a family sport now and it’s quality time spending together. We do little drills and practice some light techniques in our living room sometimes.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

I would say that Jiu-Jitsu is an activity that will show you that you can overcome things you never thought you could have or even imagined at one time, and all it takes is for you to keep showing up and stepping on the mat. I also would like to say congratulations to Ally! I am really proud of you!

Ally’s Dad Monty is proud of his daughter.

Monty, Ally and her two cousins share Jiu-Jitsu as a family activity and it is considered quality time for them. Monty finds that Jiu-Jitsu shows them overcome obstacles that they never have even imagined before.
Challenge yourself by trying Jiu-Jitsu and be surprised by how it will benefit you.
